Gynecomastia is the name given to breast enlargement in men. It can be unilateral or bilateral. It can have negative social and psychological effects. Although the cause is mostly idiopathic (undetected), some hormone disorders, drug use, chronic liver, thyroid and kidney diseases can cause gynecomastia. Gynecomastia may be characterized by an increase in mammary gland or fat tissue or both. With the examination and examinations your doctor will perform and the tests he/she will request, it will be determined from which tissue the problem originates and a treatment plan will be determined accordingly. While liposuction is mostly preferred in the treatment of a gynecomastia rich in adipose tissue, this method may be insufficient in the elimination of a gynecomastia rich in breast tissue and surgical excision may be added. In cases with significant excess skin, skin tightening can be achieved with procedures such as VASER (ultrasonic) liposuction, while surgical removal of excess skin may be required in the presence of a larger and saggy breast.

Surgery

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and may require an overnight hospital stay. The operation takes 1-1.5 hours.  It is performed through 0.5 cm incisions corresponding to the convolutions close to the areas where fat removal will be performed. A special fluid injected under the skin through these incisions for pain control. After waiting for a certain period of time, the fat is broken down with energy-based devices and the broken fat is extracted from the same holes. No drain is placed. The corset worn at the end of the operation must be worn for 1 month.

After Surgery

Eating starts in a short time. Discharge can be planned a few hours after the operation. A special corset is used for about 3 to 4 weeks. There may be slight fluid leakage from the suture areas on the first day. Bathing is allowed 2 days after the operation. Patient can return to work can be done after 1 week, do light exercise after 3 weeks and heavy exercise after 6 weeks. Bruising and swelling may be seen in the operation areas, which takes 2 to 3 weeks on average to heal. Full recovery is at the end of 6 months -1 year. These periods may vary according to the procedures added to fat removal procedures.
